Poultry Training Course Concludes at GADVASU

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana conducted a two week training course on poultry farming. 16 farmers from Punjab participated in it. Disclosing this, Dr Parminder Singh, Professor Veterinary Extension; the course coordinator told that during this hot period poultry farmers are facing difficulties due to low egg price, low production and high price of chicks. But the trainees showed enthusiasm as the demand of meat is more at this moment. Depending upon land holding, the capital and marketing intelligence, one can venture into either layer farming meant for table egg production or for broiler production meant for meat production. According to Dr Kushpreet Singh, Asstt. Prof. Extension Education, during the course the farmers were taught about specific breeds and strains of the poultry stock, construction of modern sheds, hatchery management, prevention from heat and cold during environment stress, economical and balanced ration for different stages of the birds, making different products from egg and meat, their branding, vaccination in birds, post mortem examination, preparation of project reports for borrowing loans etc. The trainees were also taken to nearby commercial layer and broiler farms for interaction, encouragement and spot queries with the poultry entrepreneurs. Dr SK Kansal, Prof. cum Head Department of Extension Education informed that university conducts poultry training twice a year in the month of April and November as there is huge rush of trainees. He advised the farmers to adopt biosecurity measures and produce antibiotic free eggs and meat. Dr HK Verma, Director of Extension Education presided the valedictory session. He distributed the certificates and asked the farmers to remain in touch with university experts and inculcate the habit of reading. GADVASU publishes monthly magazine Vigyanik Pashu Palan and university also have special books on Poultry farming.  He informed other activities and trainings of the university for the farmers especially hand on trainings for shorter duration where poultry farmers can learn to make products from eggs and meat and market to earn more profit. He emphasized to form Poultry Farmers Association so that future growth can be achieved collectively.
