Veterinary Varsity, KVK celebrated World Soil Day

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran celebrated World Soil Day wherein  large number of farmer from the  district Tarn Taran, surrounding areas and scientists from different institutes attended the programme. The programme was organized to create awareness among the farming community about the importance of soil and need for its preservation on the occasion of World Soil Day.
Mr. Navjot Singh Assistant Professor (Agronomy) welcomed all the scientists, representatives from private companies and farmer participants.  Dr. Balwinder Kumar,Deputy Director (Training) said that soil is very basis for life and maintenance of its healthis equally important for food security. He added that nutrient rich fodder for livestock can be raised from good quality soil which is essential for profitable and sustainable livestock production. Dr. SS Dhaliwal (Soil Scientist) from Department of Soil Science, PAU, Ludhiana told about the role of organic manures and bio fertilizers for integrated nutrient management in different crops. Dr. Rajan Bhatt Assistant Professor (Soil Science) from USF, Usma discussed about the importance of Leaf Color Chart for nitrogen management in important crops.  Mr. Nirmal Singh, Assistant Professor (Horticulture) highlighted the role of vegetable cultivation for crop diversification in district Tarn Taran. The Soil Health Cards were distributed to the 35 farmers on this occasion. Different activities from KVK, Self-help group and private companies were displayed to the farmers and the participating farmers shown the keen interest in literature published by University. Mineral mixture, Uromin lick and Vermi-compost were also sold   to the farmers. Queries related to soil, cropping systems and livestock were elucidated on the spot. The farmers interacted with the staff members of KVK from different disciplines. Woman farmers from different villages of Tarn Taran were also actively participated in this function. Dr. Balwinder Kumar gave vote of thanks to all the scientists and to the participating farmers.
