Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran organized a Kisan Gosthi on ‘Value addition and processing of agricultural produce’ on 22nd March 2017 at its Campus. The Deputy Commissioner, Tarn Taran was the chief guest of the programme. Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Patti, Chief Agriculture Officer, Deputy Director (Horticulture), Programme Director, ATMA, Tarn Taran also graced the occasion. Dr Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (Training), KVK Tarn Taran welcomed all the officials. Dr Kumar highlighted the importance of value addition and processing of agricultural and livestock produce in present context. He further motivated farmers to think about value addition of their produce for better economic returns. Besides, Dr. Kumar emphasized about adoption of different enterprises such as bee keeping, mushroom cultivation, goat farming, backyard poultry and fisheries for sustainable farming. He also told about the various types of trainings and facilities provided by the KVK for the farmers. Dr SS Hassan, Asstt. Scientist (Fisheries) provided guidance to framers on bee-keeping aspect. Sh. Nirmal Singh, Asstt. Professor (Horticulture) emphasized on value addition of vegetable produce and suggested that one can improve the shelf life of their produce by following value addition and processing of agricultural produce. The chief guest of the function Er. DPS Kharbanda, Deputy Commissioner motivated the potato grower towards processing of potato for chips making. He suggested the farmers to sell potato in the schools and committed minimum price of Rs. 5 per kg potato. He also interacted with farmers one by one and listened their problems regarding loans and assured them for their cases for loan approval by the banks. He said that KVK is an ‘Educational Temple’ for the farmers. He also advised farmers to visit KVK regularly to get acquaintance with latest technology, technical guidance and training of different aspects of different enterprises. He also visited the soil and water testing and home science lab of the KVK.
DC and other government officials relished the chips made from different varieties of potato prepared by Home Science scientist of the KVK Ms. Piverjit Kaur for evaluation and appreciated her efforts. An exhibition for the farmers on different varieties of potato useful for chips making i.e. Kufri Chipsona I, Kufri Chipsona III, etc. The Kufri Jyoti and Kufri Pukhraj varieties grown in Punjab was also displayed. Plug tray technique of vegetable nursery raising, vermin-compost, mineral mixture and uromin lick for dairy animals, GADVASU and KVK literature was also displayed for the farmers. The certificates of bee keeping trainees were distributed by the Chief Guest. SDM Patti and other dignitaries lauded the efforts of KVK for providing technical inputs to the farmers related to all aspects of farming and organizing Kisan Gosthi on value addition and processing of agricultural produce.
