Pig farming on scientific grounds is the need of the hour- Dr Verma

A meeting of the Progressive Pig Farmers Association (PPFA) was organized at the campus of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana. Around 80 pig farmers from different parts of the state participated in the meeting. Dr HK Verma, Director of Extension Education, GADVASU said that the challenges faced by our country in securing the food as well as nutritional security to fast growing population need an integrated approach for livestock farming. Among the various livestock species, piggery is most potential source of meat production and more efficient feed converters after the broiler. He further advised pig farmers to join association for its strengthening. Dr Jaspal Singh Hundal, coordinator of the PPFA, said that two technical lectures were delivered by university experts. The first lecture, delivered by Dr Parminder Singh, dealt with the use of feed additives in pig ration for economical feeding. The second lecture on the value addition of pork was delivered by Dr Om Parkash from Department of Livestock Products Technology of GADVASU. The president of the PPFA, Sukhwinder Singh Grewal, pointed out difficulties faced by pig farmers of the state. On this occasion an exhibition was arranged by ‘Nurture Organics’ a pharmaceutical company. The Dr Abhishek from Nutrition Division of the company educated the farmers about their products.
