In order to popularize improved fish varieties and enhance fish production 
in the district, Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mohali of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana stocked 60,000 nos. of fish fry of Jayanti Rohu, an improved variety of Indian major carp, Labeo rohita (rohu) at three different private fish farms of the district. While discussing the details, Dr. Yashwant Singh, Deputy Director of KVK Mohali told that seed of Jayanti rohu has been stocked under a project entitled “Demonstration of growth performance of improved fish varieties- Jayanti Rohu/ Amur carp” funded by National Fisheries Development Board, Hyderabad. Under this project, three fish farms of district Mohali at village Padol, Tangori and Sekhan Majra have been selected for field trials of these improved fish varieties. The seed of Jayanti rohu was procured from NFFBB, Bhubaneswar. Project Co-PI, Dr. Vikas Phulia, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) shared that fish farmers in the district mainly culture carp fish species. The Jayanti Rohu and Amur carp are improved forms of Rohu and Common carp having 18% and 27% higher growth respectively than their corresponding normal varieties. He also told that seed of Amur carp will also be provided to selected farmers. This trial will be conducted over a period of one year and farmers will also be given financial assistance by NFDB towards production cost.
