Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran Organised Kisan Mela on Crop Residue Management

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran organised  a Kisan Mela with the theme of Crop Residue Management under the project 'Promotion of Agricultural Mechanization and Machinery for In- situ Management of Crop Residue' at Harike Pattan. The Mela was witnessed by large gathering of farmers. About 2000 farmers were participated. About 56 govt. departments, private companies related to agriculture and livestock, self-help groups and stakeholders put their exhibition stalls in the mela. Dr Harish Kumar Verma, Director, Extension Education, GADVASU, Ludhiana was chief guest of the programme. Sh. Pardeep Kumar Sabharwal, Deputy Commissioner was special guest of the programme. Dr Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (Training) of KVK welcomed all the officers and farmers. Dr Kumar stressed the importance of In-situ paddy straw management among the farmers and he said that Central Government has announced a subsidy scheme on farm machinery & implements and farmers can avail this subsidy scheme. He also emphasized that we all should make efforts so that no farmer in the Punjab state should burn the paddy straw as it causes adverse effect on soil health and negative impact on future generations. Dr Harish Kumar Verma informed about importance of paddy straw in feeding of dairy animals to cut down the feeding cost. Dr Verma said Paddy straw can be treated with urea for better utilization in livestock feeding. Deputy Commissioner praised the efforts of KVK Team for awakening farmers on paddy straw management. He appealed farmers to avoid paddy straw burning and cooperate with agricultural officials in campaigning related to paddy straw management. He also assured farmers that they will fully cooperate with farmers in providing agricultural machinery related to crop residue management. Er Ranbir Singh Randhawa, Department of Agriculture, Tarn Taran explained about various implements like Happy Seeder, Chopper, Mulcher, which can be used to manage paddy straw properly. Dr Navjot Singh Brar informed that weed problem is minimized with happy seeder sown wheat crop. Dr Anil Kumar stressed that many important nutrients and organic matter got lost due to paddy straw burning. Dr Parminder Kaur, FASS Tarn Taran also discussed about insect pest and disease management in happy seeder sown wheat. Dr Piverjeet Kaur Dhillon highlighted the bad impact of paddy straw burning on animal and human health especially on kids. Dr Nirmal singh and Dr Bhanu Parkash Ch. also shared their views with farmers. On this occasion, 300 T-shirts and 500 key rings bearing the message of paddy straw management were distributed to the farmers. The farmers assured the Krishi Vigyan Kendra and district administration that they will say no to residue burning and will incorporate paddy in the soil. At the end of the programme, Dr Balwinder Kumar proposed vote of thanks and thanked all the farmers, stakeholders, govt. officials of different department, companies, media persons, police departments for security arrangements, etc. for their participation and putting full efforts in making this programme a great success.
