Krishi Vigyan Kendra, S.A.S. Nagar celebrates World Fisheries Day

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali) celebrated World Fisheries Day on 21st November, 2018. The programme was organised in collaboration with District Fisheries Department, S.A.S. Nagar on fish farm located at outskirts of village Tangori. Dr. Preeti Mamgai, Principal Scientist from ICAR-ATARI, Zone-1 Ludhiana participated in the event as chief guest. While welcoming the chief guest, Dr. Yashwant Singh, Deputy Director, Krishi Vigyan Kendra told that World Fisheries Day is celebrated every year on 21st November throughout the world to highlight the critical importance to human lives, of water and the lives it sustains, both in and out of water. World Fisheries Day serves as an important reminder that we need to change the way we manage global fisheries in order to maintain stocks and healthy aquatic ecosystems, he added. He also apprised chief guest regarding the initiatives taken by KVK for welfare of fish farmers of the district S.A.S. Nagar. Dr. Vikas Phulia, Assistant Professor (Fisheries) described the importance of Pangas catfish farming and its prospects in the district and state. Dr. Phulia also informed that he along with Seniors Fisheries Officer Sh. Jatinder Singh Gill have successfully demonstrated commercial Pangas catfish farming in approx. 5 acre area at Tangori fish farm. Sh. J.S. Gill described about current status of fish farming in the district and various financial schemes provided by State Fisheries Department to fish farmers. Pangas fish is a very good candidate species for fish pickle preparation, he further added.
Dr. Preeti Mamgai also queried about progress of National Fisheries Development Board sponsored Project “Assessment of growth performance of improved varieties – Jayanti Rohu and Amur carp” in the district S.A.S. Nagar.  Mr. Raj Kumar, on whose farm Pangas fish has been farmed for the first time, lauded the efforts of KVK and district fisheries department for welfare of farmers. The chief guest along with her team and KVK officials also visited fish farm located at village Sekhan Majra to see the technical intervention being offered by KVK Mohali. The chief guest released fish fingerlings of Jayanti rohu in production pond on this occasion. She also witnessed demonstration on poultry-cum-fish farming being conducted under the technical guidance of KVK Mohali. She lauded the efforts of Krishi Vigyan Kendra and encouraged farmers to adopt Pangas farming for diversification in carp fish farming. She also motivated farmers to go for integrated fish farming for enhancing farm income.
