Livestock training programmes at Vet Varsity attracting a huge rush: Dr Verma

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary & Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana since its inception is trying to promote livestock farming as a livelihood enterprise among educated youths as well as a sustainable and diversification means from agriculture. This was narrated by Dr Harish Kumar Verma, Director Extension Education of GADVASU on completion of twin training programmes on pig farming and dairy farming. He informed that experts from different disciplines of university shared the knowledge and experience with the trainees.

 Pigs training programme of university a hot favorite among the youths and farmers as we are getting plenty of application every day, said Dr Verma. Total of 76 trainees from across the Punjab, including farmers from Uttarakhand attended this pig training. The training apprised the trainees with scenario and future of pig farming, breeds of pig, shed construction, feeding  at different stage,  vaccination,  integration of pig with fish farming, bio-security , diseases prevention, Beside this practical experience of  handling the pig, shed structure,  measuring temperature, signs of health and  value addition of pork were also provided .

 Two week dairy training programme was also organised. 20 trainees including two females and two participants from  Haryana attended this training. Dr. Verma revealed that GADVASU started buffalo promotion scheme. Buffalo is our own animal and even an infertile and unproductive animal fetch the farmers a handsome amount. Likewise, university signed a pact with rural India solution limited, Pune who is promoting buffalo male calf farming for meat purpose. Representative of this company delivered a detailed talk about the same to the trainees. Beside this trainees were apprised with other breeds, shed design, feeding, silage, diseases prevention, vaccination, quality milk produce, value addition of milk, establishing small milk processing unit etc.

Dr S K Kansal, Prof cum Head, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education told that university besides organizing various training progarmmes for youth also published literature in the form of bulletins, books, magazine for continuous apprising the farmers with latest knowledge. Dr Kansal further highlighted that university has developed four mobile apps namely 'Precision Dairy Farming', 'Prajanan Prabandh', 'Pig Farming' and 'Goat Farming'. Farmers can download this mobile app from Google Play store for ready information. Dr Rajesh Kasrija and Dr Jaswinder Singh acted as coordinator for these training respectively.
