A new initiative for push to buffalo farming at Vet Varsity

Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, (GADVASU) Ludhiana organized a two days specialized training program on “Rearing of Buffalo Male Calves” from 14.11.2018 to 15.11.2018. Twelve candidates including two female from different parts of India participated in this course. Trainees were trained through lectures as well as practicals. They were taught latest nutritional and health management, housing, vaccination, deworming, reproductive, seasonal management, neonatal buffalo calf management along with first aid management as well as different management operations for production of buffalo calf with good body weight. Earlier, an MoU was signed between GADVASU and Rural India Solutions (RIS), Pune for promotion of rearing male buffalo calves for meat purposes, as it will help to boost the economy of the buffalo farmers.

Dr. H.K. Verma, Director Extension Education told that it is the first dedicated training conducted by the Vet-Varsity on buffalo calf rearing. The various members of RIS, Pune have been trained and equipped to aware the farmers for rearing of buffalo calf through optimum managemental practices so that body weight of around 350 kg is achieved within 16-18 months. The demand for buffalo meat is high in most of the Asian and European countries because of its high protein, low fat and cholesterol content making it a healthy meat, since eating habits of the society is changing. Dr. Verma told that GADVASU will hold such type of training as well as awareness camps to enlighten the farmers about the importance of rearing male buffalo calves. Practical training on the ideal management of male calves especially during winter season and first aid measures were demonstrated to the trainees. Question-answer session was arranged to clear their doubts about rearing of calves. Ms. Ritu from RIS explained the various facilities and inputs to be provided by RIS, Pune to farmers and encouraged the efforts of GADVASU team for providing scientific know-how regarding rearing of buffalo male calves that will gain impetus in the state.  Dr. A.S. Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU appreciated the efforts of Vet-varsity & RIS, Pune for the cause of farmers so that they get good income from rearing of buffalo calves. Dr. S.K. Kansal, Dr. Jaswinder Singh and Dr. Y.S. Jadoun helped in the smooth conduct of the training.
