Veterinary University organizes Workshop on “Use of Foldscope as a novel approach for disease diagnosis”

A workshop sponsored by Department of Biotechnology (GOI) on “Use of Foldscope as a novel approach for disease diagnosis” was organized by Department of Veterinary Pathology, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana..

Foldscope is a paper microscope which was developed at University of Stanford. The importance of Foldscope is very high as a low cost field diagnostic tool. The workshop was organized for dissemination of knowledge of use Foldscope to field Veterinarians, Scientists and Research scholars of the university. A total of 26 participants enrolled in the workshop, including field Veterinarians, Scientists and Research Scholars from the university.

Dr. H.K. Verma, Director of Extension, GADVASU was the Chief Guest of the workshop. Dr. Verma highlighted the importance of need based research and anticipated that Foldscope would be a beneficial diagnostic tool especially for field veterinarians posted at remote areas.

Dr. C.K. Singh, Head, Department of Veterinary Pathology and Organizing Secretary of workshop informed about novel approach of foldscope since it combines the internet of cell phone with the paper microscope that be carried in the pocket.

       There were three phases of the workshop. Lecture Session, Practical Session and Poster Session. Workshop began with the overview lecture about the foldscope and its use for diagnostic tool for parasitic diseases by Dr. M.S. Bal followed by an enlightening lecture on ‘Use of Foldscope as diagnostic tool for animal diseases’ by Dr. Kuldip Gupta. A lecture on Foldscope for detection of food adulterants was delivered by the resource person Dr. Geeta Mehra, Head, Dept. of Food Science, MCM DAV College for Women, Chandigarh.

The practical session was conducted by Dr. V. Mahajan, Dr. K. Gupta, Dr. Rashmi and Dr. M. S. Bal in which hands-on training regarding assembly, functioning and application of the foldscope as filed diagnostic tool was given to the participants. An exhibition of Foldscope Images captured by smart phone was also displayed for benefit of participants.

            In the valedictory function Dr. C. K. Singh extended gratitude for resource persons and faculty members for the successful completion of workshop. Best poster awards were given to Dr. Rashmi Sagar, Research Fellow, ADRC and Dr. Navrose Sangha, Ph.D. scholar, Dept. of Veterinary Pathology, GADVASU, respectively. Certificates were also distributed to all the participants.
