17 August 2012 - NSS volunteers of Vet.Varsity organizes massive plantation drive

A plantation drive was organized by the NSS wing of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University at College of Veterinary Science campus, Silver Jubilee Block campus under the slogan of “My Earth My Duty”. Dr S. S. Hassan, NSS Programme Coordinator revealed that Dr V. K. Taneja, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU planted inaugural saplings of Ficus lacor (Pilkan) in College of Veterinary Science campus and interacted with NSS volunteers and students bearing good message on this important occasion.Dr. Hassan said that plantation drive will also be conducted in College of Dairy Science and Technology campus and College of Fisheries campus as well as near the boundary and play ground of Govt. and public schools in Ludhiana during 15-21 August 2012. A target of 10000 saplings has been envisaged for plantation Dr Hassan added. A large number of University Officials, employees and students witnessed the occasion. Other distinguish faculty members were also planted saplings and to motivate and encourage the students/volunteers in this noble deed for beautifying the campus as well as protecting the environment.

About 300 students/NSS volunteers of GADVASU took part in plantation drive and beautification of campus by irrigating the plants. A total of 400 various plant saplings viz; Amaltas, Mahua, Mango, Kinnu, Ficus panda, Ficus blackae, Caderila, Maulsari, Arjan, Single Chandni, Double Chandni, Pili Kaner, Lal Kaner, Neem, Gulachin, Sukhchain, Jamun, Nimbu, Kachnar, Jakranda, Queen flower, Kanakchapa, Belpattar, Kajalia piñata, Arethrena, Jatropha were planted by students/NSS volunteers in GADVASU campus. This will be learning practical experience for GADVASU students/NSS volunteers to encourage neighboring resident to plant and care new trees as well. During plantation drive Dr Hassan, emphasized on forestation, reforestation, disadvantages of deforestation and the importance of ornamental, fruiting, medicinal and shaded trees and shrubs in purifying the air, as natural resources. He suggested to adopt plant on personal occasion like birthday, marriage anniversary day, and holidays such as Republic day, Independence day as well as during Van Mahotsav week because trees are the lungs of our land.
