Name : Dr Vijay Kumar Taneja Brief Introduction                        Dr Vijay Kumar Taneja, Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences), ICAR, New Delhi has taken over as the new Vice-Chancellor of Guru Angad Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, on December 20, 2006.  Dr Taneja is a well-known scientist of national and international repute.  He is the fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) and Indian Society for Study of Animal Reproduction (ISSAR).  He is the recipient of Nils Lagerlof memorial award for his meritorious contributions to research in Animal Reproduction. He has been the member of informal Panel of experts on Animal Genetic Resources of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for 3 years and involved in developing Country, Regional and Global Report on State of World Animal Genetic Resources.  He has been the Chairman, Animal Production & Health Commission for Asia & Pacific and member Working Group on Animal Husbandry for X and XI Plan. He was Chairman of Sub-group on “Cattle and Buffalo Breeding” Government of India.  He has been instrumental in developing National Policy for Management of Animal Genetic Resources, National Breeding Policy on Cattle and Buffalo, Sheep, Goat and Rabbits and National Livestock policy. The major research contributions of Dr Taneja are Genetic evaluation of crossbred cattle genotypes and their performance testing under normal and free choice feeding, Synthesis of ‘Frieswal’, a crossbred cattle strain, Standardization and use of embryo transfer and related techniques in cattle and buffaloes. Various other contributions of Dr Taneja include, formulation and implementation of National Project on Cattle & Buffalo Breeding with focus on conservation and improvement of indigenous breeds, Disease Free Zones for FMD and other diseases and Networking of Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratories in the country for surveillance and early warning and response system. He initiated programs on ethno-veterinary medicine and indigenous knowledge and checked the ingress of highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in the country through effective control measures. Dr Taneja is a well-known academician, scientist and manager in Animal Sciences.  Before joining as Deputy Director General (Animal Sciences), ICAR, New Delhi, he served as Animal Husbandry Commisioner (Govt. of India). He has played pivotal role in developing Animal Husbandry and Dairying.
