The Department of Animal Breeding and Genetics cam in to existence on the bifurcation of the Department of Animal Science in 1998. The department is engaged in the teaching of various courses in the areas of Animal Breeding, Animal Genetics, Biostatistics and Computer Applications both at the Undergraduate and Post-graduate levels. The Department is also running research projects on the genetic improvement on dairy cattle, buffaloes, layers, broilers and Japanese qualis. The department is also having a Reproduction Biotechnology Unit for developing the technologies of embryo transfer to enhance the genetic improvement of dairy cattle and buffaloes. The department has established a dairy farm of 288 buffaloes and 160 crossbred cattle with semen freezing laboratory and a poultry breeding farm having the flock strength of 3000 layers, 10000 broilers and 12000 Japanese qualis for undertaking the research programmes.
