Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, organized an Animal Judging Competition with the objective of training young veterinarians in the art and science of animal judging and highlighting its significance in animal selection and breed improvement.

Friesian (HF) cattle using breed-specific score cards developed after getting inputs in a brainstorming session. The score cards incorporated important breed-specific characteristics and judging parameters, enabling participants to systematically assess and score the animals. The practical exercise provided students an opportunity to apply their knowledge of breed characteristics and animal conformation while developing their skills in observation, comparative assessment and decision-making.
Dr. J. P. S. Gill, Vice-Chancellor, applauded the efforts of the organizing team and stated that this initiative towards preparing a team of skilled animal judges could go a long way in facilitating the selection of high-potential animals and contributing to breed improvement.

The competition provided students with valuable practical exposure beyond classroom teaching and fostered healthy competition and professional learning. The event was conducted under the supervision of a dedicated team of faculty members, who coordinated the judging and other arrangements for its smooth conduct.
The winning teams will be felicitated and awarded during the upcoming Pashu Palan Mela, to be organized by the University on September 18–19, 2026. The recognition will acknowledge their performance and encourage students to further develop their expertise in animal judging, selection and breed improvement.
