Seven day NSS Special Winter camp on Disaster Management at GADVASU

For more than 125 volunteers of the National Service Scheme (NSS), it was all about “learning through practice” as they learnt the intricacies of Disaster Management besides developing capacity to meet emergencies and natural disasters during a week-long NSS Special Winter camp here at Guru Angad Dev veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana campus. Aimed at training students in disaster management the seven day camp was inaugurated by Presidents' Medal recipient, Asst. Commandant Mr. Suresh Yadav from National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Laddowal.Organised by The camp had a squad of 20 members of NDRF team playing “trainers” and over 125 students from College of Fisheries, College of Dairy Science and Technology and School of Animal Biotechnology getting hands-on exposure. This year’s camp was themed around concept of 'Aapda nu aan na deo, je aa jaaye taan saambh lao” (Let Disaster not happen; else, manage it) Asst Commandant Suresh Yadav delivered a lecture on capacity building and demonstrated as to how the Disaster management team members should act wisely during any natural or man made disasters. Using the live demonstration techniques backed by audio visual presentations, Inspector Ram Lal Haran, Incharge, NDRF team explained the basic concept of providing first aid. The students also learnt and themselves performed various tasks to help people during natural disasters and how to avoid and reduce casualties.“With Ludhiana falling in the high-risk seismic zone the need of such camps assumes paramount importance.  It has been found during a natural disaster like earthquake or floods, casualties goes higher post calamity only due to lack of knowledge about disaster management”, remarked NSS Programme Coordinator Nidhi Sharma.DSW-cum-EO, Dr. Satyavan Rampal emphasized that with such camps the volunteers developed competence for selfless service for the nation  specially at the time of any natural calamity  as they also share the learning with their family members and friends. NSS College Coordinators, Dr. Sivakumar, Dr. Mukhopadhyay and Dr. Naveen Kumar reiterated to student that such camps are essential and are bound not only to help individuals but masses in case of any eventuality.
