Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Tarn Taran organizes Field Day on Gobhi Sarson at village Toot, Valtoha

February 9 Expiring at: May 10

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Booh, Tarn Taran under Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University organized Field Day on Gobhi Sarson (GSC-7) on 01.02.2017 at village Toot of Valtoha block. The Field Day was sponsored under ‘Cluster Frontline Demonstration Project’ operational under ‘Indian Council of Agricultural Research- Agricultural Technology Application and Research Institute (ICAR-ATARI)’ Zone-I, Ludhiana. The main mandate of the programme was to motivate farmers towards crop diversification through the inclusion of oilseed crops in crop rotation to get higher returns from the system. Farmers of village Toot and neighbouring villages were brought to field, where Gobhi Sarson (GSC-7) a variety was cultivated.

Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Deputy Director (Training), KVK, Booh, Tarn Taran welcomed farmers for the programme and highlighted the importance of crop diversification in sustainable crop production. Dr. Kumar gave emphasis on crop diversification by shifting from routine rice-wheat cropping sequence to other systems. He suggested replacement of rice-wheat cropping system by involving oilseed, pulses and vegetable crops and suggested alternative options like rice-gobhi sarson-bajra (fodder), rice-wheat-summer moong, rice-pea-summer moong cropping system etc. These cropping systems not only improve farmers’ income levels but also exert positive influence on soil health. Dr. Kumar further highlighted the importance of gobhi sarson cultivar GSC-7 and told about its oil which is good against cardiac diseases.

Sh. Navjot Singh, Assistant Professor (Agronomy) provided technical guidance on production technology of gobhi sarson and covered all aspects including weed, insect-pest and disease management related to its cultivation.  Dr Anil Kumar, Assistant Professor (Soil Science) provided guidance on fertilization aspect of gobhi sarson and suggested soil test based fertilizer application. He highlighted inclusion of sulphur containing fertilizer in oilseed crops as sulphur improves oil quality of oilseed crops. Dr. Kumar suggested that application of single super phosphate is beneficial to oilseed crops rather than di-ammonium phosphate as it contains sulphur content also. Fungicide and insecticide were also distributed to the farmers on this occasion. At last, Sh. Navjot, graced the occasion by delivering vote of thanks to the farmers for their active participation and interest in technology.
