Kisan Krishi Samelan-cum-Animal Welfare and Treatment Camp at Booh, Patti, Tarn Taran

Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Booh, Tarn Taran organized a one day ‘On-Campus’ ‘Kisan Krishi Samelan-cum-Animal Welfare and Treatment Camp’ at Booh, Patti, Tarn Taran on 16 September 2015. The Camp exhibited an enormous response from large number of farmers of the district Tarn Taran.

Speaking on the inaugural session Dr. Prahlad Singh, Associate Director (Training)-cum-Principal Scientist and Head, KVK, Tarn Taran said that the one day ‘Kisan Krishi Samelan-cum-Animal Welfare and Treatment Camp’ will help farmers, farm women, and rural youth towards the development of self entrepreneurship in agriculture and livestock sector with integrated approach. Dr Singh said that Dr. HK Verma, Director of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences had been instrumental in providing all the support both financial and technical expertise in making this camp a success.  Such type of Agri-cum-Livestock events organized by the KVK are helpful in spreading the awareness among the rural masses leading to social and economic upliftment. Dr Singh discussed about the various activities being conducted by the KVK in the district and made farmers aware of the KVK’s mandate and functioning as well as the benefits it has for the farmers. Facts about diversification in agriculture and its impact on environmental conservation were also conveyed to the farmers. The farmers were advised to think upon the lines of value addition of agricultural produce so that the economic returns are more from agriculture and livestock sector for self sustenance. Dr Singh also delivered a lecture on Breeding and Reproduction Management of Livestock in the present farming scenario of the district.

Dr. Shashipal, Scientist LPM, delivered a lecture on Animal nutrition and its role in animal production. Dr Anil Kumar, Scientist Soils, discussed about management and importance of Soil Fertility and testing, as well as, management of animal waste and vermicomposting. Sh Navjot Singh, Scientist Agronomy, in his lecture made farmers aware of agriculture waste Management and prevention of stubble burning in fields. He also delivered a lecture on Horti-pasture – An alternative for traditional fodder production practice. by, guest faculty from Khalsa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences and the subject matter specialist of the KVK on Livestock production, health and management. Dr Bhanu Prakash the newly joined Scientist Fisheries delivered his innovative talk on Role of fisheries in Integrated farm production system.

Dr. Sajjad Hussain, Professor Surgery, Khalsa College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Amritsar and Chief Guest on the occasion addressed the farmers and appreciated them for their overwhelming participation in the Camp. Dr. Sajjad lead a team of Clinicians; Drs. Murtaza (Assistant Professor Veterinary Gynaecology and Obstetrics), Mohsina (Assistant Professor Medicine) and Karan Maan (Assistant Professor Surgery) and the students of final year BVSc and AH. One of the students Mr Manraj Deep Singh delivered a talk on ectoparasite control in livestock. 

One of the farmers Sardar Baba Singh addressed the farmers and appreciated the gatherings response to the camp. He also stressed upon the importance of scientific farming and the role of KVK in dissipating knowledge to the farmers. 

About 43 cases of animals pertaining to Surgery (9), Medicine (Clinical 11 and preventive 9) and Gynaecology (14) were treated in the camp. Livestock cases included those suffering from upper patellar fixation (6) and lameness, mastitis, infertility and other metabolic and production diseases which were treated in the camp. The medicines were distributed free of cost to the farmers in the camp. Representatives from two of the drug companies (MSD India Limited and Virbach India Limited) participated in the camp by displaying their products for the use of farmers.

Besides the above activities the camp also had on display an exhibition showing the activities of the KVK and the recommended practices for the farmers on various aspects of Agriculture and Livestock production.   

Dr Shashipal proposed the vote of thanks to the participating farmers (163) for showing their interest towards the ‘Kisan Krishi Samelan-cum-Animal Welfare and Treatment Camp’ for self sustenance and entrepreneurship development in agriculture and allied fields. He also appreciated the support extended by S Rajbir Singh, the Village sarpanch and other members panchayat of village Booh for making the training event a success. The camp was organized by the joint effort of the Scientific faculty and nonteaching staff of the KVK.
