Trio Training Programs by Veterinary Varsity to Push Livestock Farming

Three training programs on different aspects of livestock farming were initiated by Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana. Fifteen vibrant farmers including two farm women from different areas of Punjab acquired one week training on “Setting-up of milk cooling plants” from 18.03.2019 to 22.03.2019 in collaboration with 'Society for Action in Community Health' (Ludhiana based NGO). In this training program experts delivered lectures as well as hands on training covering all important aspects of establishment of milk cooling plants which is very essential for preparation of quality dairy products. Director Extension Education, Dr. H.K. Verma, interacted with the trainees and enlightened them about huge scope of dairy sector in India as well as in Punjab. He told that university is persistent in catering all sort of need of dairy farmers. Dr. S.K. Kansal, Professor and Head, Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education encouraged the trainees to start a dairy enterprise on small scale basis then to move on medium and large scale.

Simultaneously another training program on “Specialized Pig Farming” for farmers concluded at vet-varsity for farmers & rural youth. 27 farmers from various parts of Punjab participated in this training course which included lectures, practicals, hands on training for start up in pig farming. University is continuously doing the efforts for farmers to train them in scientific pig farming as it is a profitable business because the feed conversion efficiency and prolificacy is much higher of swine as compared to other enterprises of livestock, further value addition of pork has greater opportunity to generate self-employment.

At the same time, another sponsored training program for ‘Paravets’ from Jammu and Kashmir” is going on. To revive the knowledge about latest interventions with new tools is very crucial to perform proficiently in the field. 27 Paravets from Animal Husbandry Department, Jammu & Kashmir are participating. This training is being sponsored by National livestock Mission. Dr. Verma informed that University also undertakes demand based tailor made courses as per the request from various organizations. To cater the rising demand of the society in the field of livestock produce and to provide entrepreneurs skills, GADVASU is making efforts first to train farmers in livestock and hand hold them as sustainable entrepreneurs and also inculcate the new venture skills in livestock farming by promoting value addition, quality produce skills for harvesting opportunities to tackle unemployment on one hand and serving the society on other.
