Pig farming training under RKVY completed at Vet Varsity

One week training programme on Pig Farming was organized at Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana under Rashtriya Krishi Vikas Yojna concluded on 5 July 2019 (Friday). It was exclusively for schedule caste category farmers as a viable means of self-employment and nutritional security. A total of 37 candidates attended the programme from different districts of Punjab. Dr. H.K. Verma, Director Extension Education, GADVASU told that Pig farming, once considered as an occupation of downtrodden, is now gaining all-time high popularity in the state overcoming the social taboo attached with this farming. GADVASU since its inception focusing on promotion of different type of livestock farming for the youth. Now, when the demand of pig farming training is very high, university started organizing at least one training programme per month to cater the need of pig framing aspirants. He informed that livestock sector has bunches of option to adopt like dairy farming, poultry farming, goat farming, fish farming and pig farming, value addition of livestock produce, feed manufacturing etc. for all section of farmers viz. landless, small to large farmers through various modus operandi. One can adopt as per likeliness and resource available. Further Dr Verma told that university has developed four mobile apps including one on Pig farming in Punjabi language. Anyone can download these apps from Google play store as a ready reckoner source of knowledge. 

Dr S.K Kansal, Head, Department of veterinary & Animal Husbandry Extension Education while interacting with the farmers said that this is a unique type of training in which beside theoretical and practical knowledge certain inputs like literature, mineral mixture as a start up initiative were provided to the farmers. Dr Jaswinder Singh, Coordinator of this training told that trainees were apprised with various topics like breeds, breeding, management, shed design, weather management, vaccination protocols, diseases & their prevention, value addition of pork, Economics etc. practical training on handling of pig, measuring temperature, signs of healthy animals was also provided.  Dr Rajesh Kasrija and Dr Bilawal Singh Associated Coordinators of this training revealed that utmost care has been taken to provide congenial and comfortable environment to the participants so that they can focus on the leaning.
