Vet Varsity and Nestle R&D Centre India Collaborate on Sustainable Dairy Nutrition Research

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, has signed a significant Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Nestlé R&D Centre India Private Limited, IMT Manesar, for a collaborative research project titled “Optimizing Animal Diets to Reduce Milk Carbon Footprint and Enhance Farm Profitability in Dairy Cows.”
The MoU was signed by Dr. P.S. Brar, Director of Research and Mr. Jagdeep Singh Marahar, Managing Director, Nestlé R&D Centre India. Congratulating both partners, Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Vice-Chancellor remarked, “This collaboration reflects our commitment to advancing sustainable dairy farming practices through science-driven innovation. Reducing the carbon footprint of milk production while improving farm profitability is an important step towards climate-resilient livestock farming.”
Dr. J.S. Hundal, Head, Department of Animal Nutrition, shared details of the upcoming research trials. The study will assess the impact of optimized diets on milk production, nutrient digestibility, and overall performance in lactating dairy cows. The project will be spearheaded by the Department of Animal Nutrition in collaboration with Nestlé India’s technical team and supported by Nestlé R&D Centre India with funding of ?30.8 lakh.
Highlighting the significance of the initiative, Dr. R.S. Grewal, Director of Extension Education, stated that the research will provide actionable insights for the dairy sector, enabling farmers to adopt feeding strategies that improve productivity, reduce enteric methane emissions, and enhance profitability.
Dr. Naveen Kumar Puttalingaiah, Regional Agricultural Science Operations Manager – Asia at the Nestlé Institute of Agricultural Sciences, Singapore, and Dr. Rajiv Thakur from Nestlé Moga highlighted Nestlé’s commitment to sustainable dairy farming: “Through this collaboration with Vet Varsity, we aim to develop farmer-friendly, science-backed feeding solutions to reduce the environmental footprint of milk while ensuring profitability for future generations.”
This partnership marks another milestone in Varsity’s proactive efforts to foster industry–academia synergy, driving innovation for sustainable and climate-smart livestock farming.
