Murrah Buffalo Breed Improvement Gets Major Boost as Vet Varsity Receives Elite Young Bull

In a landmark stride toward strengthening Murrah buffalo genetic improvement in Punjab and Northern India, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana has received a one-year-old elite Murrah bull as a generous gift from renowned Haryana dairy farmer, Mr. Shiv Kumar Redhu of Village Balak, Hisar. The bull, donated free of cost, possesses exceptional genetic potential, supported by multi-generation performance records and DNA-verified parentage.
A delegation led by Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education, visited Village Balak to formally accept the valuable germplasm. A simple yet significant ceremony was organized at Mr. Redhu’s farm, attended by Sarpanch Sh. Krishan Redhu, Ex-Sarpanch Sh. Sadhu Ram Redhu, Balak Gaushala President Sh. Mahavir, and local social workers.
Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Vice Chancellor emphasized that the university remains committed to scientific and sustainable breed improvement of dairy animals.
The bull belongs to a highly productive female line that has driven Mr. Redhu’s Murrah improvement efforts for over 15 years. The dam, with HLDB-recorded first lactation yield of 3600 kg and peak yield of 17.746 kg/day, and the grand dam, with NDDB-recorded yield of 5102 kg in 305 days, peak yield 26.5 kg/day, and an exceptional 16 lactations, were also showcased during the event. The farmer’s commitment to meticulous, data-driven selection and complete pedigree documentation was widely appreciated.
Varsity officials stated that the donated bull will significantly contribute to quality semen production and ongoing genetic improvement programs. Villagers and dairy enthusiasts hailed the farmer–university collaboration as a model for accelerating Murrah genetic progress.
