Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana for Pig farmers. Owing to wake of COVID Pandemic and keeping in mind the social distancing, a batch of only four pig farmers of district Ludhiana were selected for the training. The training aimed to provide practical knowledge and hands on training through lectures and mainly demonstrations viz. Artificial insemination, Heat detection, Semen handling, and Oestrous cycle, Breeding soundness, Breeds and importance of back fat thickness and lean meat in Pigs.
Dr Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU congratulated for successful completion of the training programme. He said that for fast propagation of good germplasm, AI is the answer and it is a technique which every pig farmer should skill to do insemination at his level, as it has obvious advantage of economical, introduction of elite germplasm and controlling Inbreeding. The Punjab farmers are rearing Large White Yorkshire breed from last four decades and it is high time we introduce new germplasm in our livestock. Punjab Animal husbandry department has brought exotic germplasm – Landrace, Hampshire and Large White Yorkshire from UK and these breed semen will be made available to farmers, that’s why training for farmers is mandatory.
Dr H K Verma, Director of Extension Education said that this is the first training organized by GADVASU, as lot of farmers were requesting for the same. Further, he clarified that every week university will be organize such training for pig farmers. Training was coordinated by Dr. Prahlad Singh, Head, Department of Gynaecology and Dr Ashwani Kumar Singh, Associate Professor. Dr Amit Sharma, Assistant Professor, Deptt. of LPM was Technical Coordinator of the training and trained farmers for breeding soundness. Dr Jaswinder Sigh and Dr Bharti detailed about nutrition and breeds for the farmers. Scientist-farmer interaction was also arranged and resolved all their queries. As a start up kit, ten Insemination catheters were also provided to every farmer. The training was corganized by following all norms related to Covid s.a. masking, hands sanitizing and social distancing. Programme was coordinated by Dr SK Kansal, Head, Department of Veterinary Extension.
On this occasion a quarterly digital newsletter of GADVASU, 'Pashu Palan Sunehe' initiated by Directorate of Extension, was also released by Vice Chancellor. Dr Inderjeet appreciated the efforts of the Directorate and also suggested to bring out such newsletter more frequently covering all aspects of Livestock, Poultry and Fisheries. This digital newsletter carries basic animal husbandry, poultry and fisheries operations during this season, interesting news on livestock sector and important events during the preceding period.
