Vet Varsity organizes Camp on Sensor-Based Dairy Farming

July 4

An awareness-cum-demonstration camp on Sensor-Based Dairy Farming was organized under the Farmer FIRST Project at Village Mehal Kalan. The objective of the camp was to familiarize dairy farmers with the latest sensor technologies and their practical applications in improving animal health, productivity, and management efficiency.
This innovative outlook was arranged under the guidance of Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education and Nodal Officer and Dr. Parminder Singh, Principal Investigator of the Project. The event was organized by Dr. Amandeep Singh, CoPI and Dr. Gurpreet Kour Tulla.
Dr. Amandeep Singh demonstrated the use of Temperature Humidity Index (THI) sensors, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS) meters, Gas sensors/Air Quality meters and Grain moisture meters. He highlighted the use of THI sensors to assess the temperature and humidity in the farm and the production of gases like methane, carbon dioxide, hydrogen sulphide, carbon monoxide etc. shall be assessed through gas sensors. The TDS meter used to check the quality of water.
He explained how real-time data from these devices can help farmers make timely decisions regarding animal health, feeding, and reproduction, ultimately leading to increased milk yield and profitability. He emphasized the importance of technology adoption in traditional dairy farming systems. “With increasing input costs and competition, precision livestock farming using sensors is no longer a luxury but a necessity. These tools can alert farmers early about disease symptoms, optimize nutrition, and reduce labor costs,”he stated.
Farmers were also given hands-on experience with the equipment, and these equipment were installed in 9 dairy farms. The sensors installed in the dairy farms will record the data for 30 days and the advisory for reducing THI, noxious gases, proper storage of feed etc. after analysing the data. Participants also clarified their doubts and shared their experiences.
