Winter Management Camp organized under Farmer FIRST Project

January 2

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, organised a camp on winter management and mineral mixture feeding in dairy animals under ICAR sponsored farmer FIRST Project at village Mehal Kalan.
The project is working under the guidance and supervision of Dr. Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education and Nodal Officer of the Project. The beneficiary farmers from all the adopted villages gathered at village Mehal Kalan. Dr. Parminder Singh, Principal Investigator of the project delivered a lecture focusing on the winter management and mineral mixture feeding.
The session was organized with the aim of enhancing farmers’ understanding of scientific dairy practices to improve animal health and productivity during the winter season. Dr. Parminder Singh underlined the challenges faced by dairy animals in winter, such as cold stress, reduced feed intake and increased risk of diseases. He emphasized the importance of providing proper shelter, maintaining cleanliness, and protecting animals from cold winds to ensure their comfort and well-being.
A major highlight of the lecture was nutritional management of dairy animals in winter. Dr. Singh guided farmers on balancing rations, increasing energy-rich feeds, and ensuring the availability of clean and lukewarm drinking water. He stressed that proper nutrition during winter plays a crucial role in maintaining milk production and overall animal health. Dr. Parminder Singh also elaborated on the proper use and importance of mineral mixtures in dairy animal feed. He explained how mineral mixtures help prevent nutritional deficiencies, improve reproductive performance, strengthen immunity and enhance milk yield. Farmers were advised to include recommended quantities of mineral mixture regularly in the daily feed of dairy animals.
The interactive session allowed farmers to ask questions and share their experiences, making the lecture highly engaging and practical. Mineral mixture bags were distributed among the beneficiary farmers and were encouraged to continue its use in the future.
