Vet Varsity Dairy farming training sparks interest among Youth, Foreign returns and Retirees

Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, successfully concluded its two-week Dairy Farming Training Programme. The training empowered youth with scientific dairy farming practices, while foreign-return individuals and retirees showed keen interest in adopting dairy entrepreneurship. A total of 55 trainees, including one woman, participated in the training. For the first time, three foreign-return participants expressed strong motivation to establish dairy ventures in Punjab.

Dr. J.P.S. Gill, Vice Chancellor, appreciated the Department of Veterinary and Animal Husbandry Extension Education for organizing an impactful training programme and reaffirmed the university’s commitment to empowering farmers through scientific knowledge, skill-based training and technological support.

Dr. R.S. Grewal, Director of Extension Education, emphasized the role of dairying in strengthening rural livelihoods, ensuring nutritional security, and generating employment. He added that diversification and value addition of dairy products can significantly enhance farmers’ income.

Dr. Jaswinder Singh, Course Director, highlighted that the programme combined theory with hands-on training, covering scientific housing, balanced feeding, mastitis control, vaccination, clean milk production, reproductive management, biosecurity and dairy marketing.

A dedicated session on financial assistance and institutional credit was delivered by Shri Bishap Pratap Singh from Bank of Baroda, who guided participants on loan procedures and financial planning for dairy enterprises. Shri Surinder Singh, Deputy Director, Dairy Development Department, Punjab, provided valuable insights into government schemes and departmental support mechanisms for dairy farmers.

The valedictory session was addressed by Dr. R.K. Sharma, Director, Regional Research and Training Centre, Talwara, who encouraged participants to adopt scientific dairy practices and entrepreneurial approaches. The programme was effectively coordinated by Dr. Ravdeep Singh and Dr. Parteek Singh Dhaliwal, with student coordinator Dr. Suchprem Kaur.
