Vet Varsity Trains Farmers in Advanced Dairy Nutrition Technologies

The Department of Animal Nutrition, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana organized a five-day Hands-on Training Programme on “Nutritional Technologies for Dairy Farmers.” 24 farmers, including two women, from Punjab and adjoining states participated in the training . The program aimed to equip dairy farmers with practical skills and scientific knowledge to enhance productivity through improved nutritional practices.
Dr. J.S. Hundal, HoD of Animal Nutrition, highlighted that the training focused on translating advanced nutritional technologies into field applications. Key topics included natural fermentation of straws, preparation of urea molasses mineral blocks (UMMB), feed testing, mineral mixture formulation, bypass fat preparation and the formulation of balanced rations for calves, lactating goats, and dairy animals. The program also covered silage making, safe feed storage, and strategies for aflatoxin control.
Addressing the participants, Dr. R.S. Grewal, Director of Extension Education, emphasized the importance of adopting scientific feeding practices. He urged farmers to view dairy farming not merely as a livelihood but as a scalable agribusiness model capable of ensuring sustainable income and generating rural employment. He also commended the department for organizing farmer-centric training programs that address practical, field-level challenges.
Course Coordinators Dr. Jujhar Singh, Dr JS Lamba and Dr Udeybir Singh expressed satisfaction with the enthusiastic participation and proactive engagement of the farmers. They witnessed the growing interest among dairy farmers in adopting modern nutritional interventions to improve herd health and milk productivity. The program concluded with a lively interactive session.
