
The Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, organized a brainstorming session on “Role of Animal Judging in Breed Improvement” today. The session brought together field veterinary officers, scientists, farmers, and research
scholars to develop a standardized framework for livestock judging.
Dr. J. P. S. Gill, Vice-Chancellor appreciated the initiative and emphasized that judging should primarily contribute to germplasm and breed improvement. He suggested organizing judging competitions for students and young faculty and developing a comprehensive policy document.
Dr. P. S. Walia, Director, Animal Husbandry Department (AHD) , Punjab stressed that animal judging is not merely about appearance but requires sound technical knowledge to justify selection decisions.
Dr. R. S. Grewal, Director of Extension Education, while welcoming the participants, highlighted the need for a structured judging policy. He emphasized bridging gaps in existing evaluation practices and revising the buffalo score card according to current standards.
Dr. Harveen Kaur, Joint Director, AHD, Punjab, highlighted field-level challenges and noted that progressive farmers are increasingly aware of breed improvement and maintain proper records.
In the technical sessions Dr. Ravdeep Singh enlightened the audience regarding the history and importance of dairy animal judging, Dr. Puneet Malhotra on breed characteristics and judging parameters of Murrah and Nili Ravi and Dr. Ravikant Gupta on evaluation criteria for Holstein
Friesian and Jersey cattle. Following the expert sessions, an open discussion and interaction session was held with the audience.
Dr. Parminder Singh, Additional Director of Extension Education, delivered the vote of thanks and stated that Vet Varsity will formulate a formal policy paper and standardized guidelines based on the session’s outcomes. The session was attended by around 100 participants.
