The Pashu Palan Mela of Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana, is set to offer valuable
opportunities for people from all walks of life. All preparations have been completed for the 
smooth conduct of the two-day mela, which will be held on 18 and 19 September 2026.
On the eve of the event, Dr Jatinder Paul Singh Gill, Vice-Chancellor, said that special emphasis will be laid on providing awareness about importance of biosecurity and the theme of Mela is “strengthen the biosecurity- prevent animal diseases” to inform the livestock farmers about biosecurity measures. He noted that the mela has been designed to serve livestock farmers, students, entrepreneurs, women, children and urban visitors alike.
Dr Gill informed that the university will present a special showcase of its new innovative technologies, value-added dairy products and entrepreneurship initiatives developed by College of Dairy and Food Science Technology. A major attraction will be a range of innovative dairy products. These include “Makhmali,” a premium cream cheese prepared from buffalo milk, specialty cheeses, mozzarella cheese, goat-milk feta cheese and other value-added dairy products. It will highlight Varsity’s global outreach initiatives.
Another significant innovation to be exhibited is a rapid paper-strip kit for milk adulteration detection. The kit can identify common adulterants such as urea, neutralizers, salt, hydrogen peroxide and formalin within 30 seconds to five minutes, providing a practical tool for ensuring milk quality and consumer safety.
The university will also showcase products developed under its “GADVASU Pure” brand, including a unique goat-milk shampoo. Development of products such as Chevre cheese, offer new opportunities for diversification and enhanced returns to livestock farmers.
The event will further highlight the success of entrepreneurs who have received training, technical guidance and incubation support from varsity. Enterprises such as 72 Degrees, Green Pockets, Grandpason Dairy Products, ‘Manpreet Dairy Farm’ and Tejas Dairy Products will display a variety of innovative dairy products.
The demonstration will illustrate how research-based technologies can create value-added products, strengthen the dairy sector and generate new income and employment opportunities.
Dr Ravinder Singh Grewal, Director of Extension Education, said that university experts will interact directl
y with visitors through question-and-answer sessions, discussions and live demonstrations. Special guidance will be provided on th
e management, vaccination and routine care of companion animals such as dogs and cats. Farmers can bring blood, urine and milk samples of their animals for testing, a facility that will be available free of cost during the mela.
The College of Fisheries will demonstrate modern technologies related to freshwater and saline-water fish farming, ornamental fish production, aquarium fabrication, fish processing and value addition. Ornamental fish, aquarium plants and fish-related products will also be available for purchase.
Women engaged in livestock farming, whether as entrepreneurs or supporting family enterprises, will be able to consult university specialists on livestock products and their utilization. Visitors can also explore and taste a wide range of dairy and meat products developed by university departments. The Department of Livestock Products Technology will display value-added meat products including patties, pickles, cutlets, nuggets and sausages.
The exhibition of recent advances in animal husbandry is expected to benefit unemployed youth and small farmers interested in establishing livestock-based enterprises with limited investment. Representatives from banks, insurance agencies and university departments will 
provide guidance on financing and enterprise 
development. Food-processing machinery will also be displayed to familiarize visitors with modern techniques for producing hygienic, high-quality and value-added food products.
A variety of university publications on livestock diseases, treatment practices and training programmes for aspiring entrepreneurs will be available at the mela. Farmers can also subscribe to the university’s monthly magazine, “Vigiyanak Pashu Palan.”
To recognize excellence in the sector, the university will confer Chief Minister Awards on three progressive farmers under three categories—Cattle Farming, Poultry Farming and Value Addition of Livestock Products. Through this initiative, the university aims to encourage farmers, entrepreneurs and young people to adopt scientific and commercially viable livestock-production practices.
