Vet Varsity trains students on Scientific Backyard Poultry Farming

Department of Livestock Production Management, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, Ludhiana has organized one-day training programme on “Scientific Backyard Poultry Farming: Training and Practical Demonstration” for 10 beneficiary students. Dr. Yashpal Singh Course Director informed that the programme was conducted under the title of “Training of SC Students (UG & PG) and SC Farmers for Entrepreneurial Skill Development in Animal Husbandry, Dairying & Fisheries for Self-Employment and Employment Generation" under sub- component “Scheduled Caste Subs-Plan sub plan (SC-SP) “Strengthening Agricultural Higher Education in India". The training was conducted and Co-ordinated by Drs. Daljeet Kaur, Suresh Kumar and Gurpreet Kaur.
The programme was organized with the objective of providing students with scientific knowledge and hands-on practical skills in backyard poultry farming, with special emphasis on improved poultry management, low-cost housing, feeding, health care, biosecurity, breed selection, chick management and efficient utilization of poultry resources. During the training, the students were introduced to the principles of scientific backyard poultry production, including selection of suitable birds, housing requirements, space management, feeding and watering practices, litter management, sanitation and disease prevention. The participants were also sensitized about the potential of backyard poultry farming as a low-investment and income-generating enterprise, particularly for rural households and unemployed youth. The students expressed keen interest in adopting the scientific practices demonstrated during the training.
Dr. S.S. Randhawa, Dean, College of Veterinary Science congratulated the faculty members of the department for organizing the training programme and appreciated their efforts in providing students with meaningful practical exposure and skill-oriented learning in scientific backyard poultry farming.
