An international workshop on Growing with pig farming

Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized one day International workshop on the theme ‘Growing with Pig Farming’. Dr H K Verma, Director of Extension Education welcomed International guest Mr. Gerand Drissen PUM expert, Netherlands, and Chief Guest Dr. S K Uppal, Dean Post Graduate Studies, GADVASU, Ludhiana, Dr. Uppal said that pig farming is gaining popularity & more and more farmers are adopting pig farming. We need to train the pig farmers for better growth & productivity & further, the correct management practices, health, zoonotic aspect of the pig farming needs to be disseminated to the farmers.

Dr Verma said that the Directorate of Extension is regularly organizing International workshops for sharing information by experts with academicians and research scholars and it is the 4th international workshop of this session. There is a long association of GADVASU with PUM, Netherlands which deputes senior experts to solve the problems of the farmers and provide consultancy for knowledge sharing.

Mr. Drissen discussed about the scenario of pig farming in Holland especially the breeding units, finishing units and big pig farmers of his country. Pig welfare, environmental issue are their prime concern. Later on Mr. Drissen highlighted the good or not so good points of pig farming. He visited various farms in last couple of days and deliberated with the participants on how to improve the pig sector . Dr. Ashwani from Gynaecology department showed the video on "collection of semen from boar & perform" AI.

Directorate of Extension Education has developed a mobile app on Pig Farming for farmers. Dr Verma said that pig farming has taken a good shape in the Punjab and there are around 700-800 pig farmers in the state and there number is increasing. Dr Verma delivered a lecture on the topic "GADVASU initiatives for promoting pig farming" in the state and university has prepared good literature and related material for educating the farmers.          

Dr. S K Kansal and Dr Jaswinder Singh coordinated this workshop. Dr Kansal revealed that pig farming is fastly growing in the state & department is regularly organizing training programme on Pig Farming. 42 participants participated in this workshop.

Dr. A. S. Nanda, Vice-Chancellor, GADVASU, Ludhiana congratulated the Directorate of Extension Education for organizing the workshop.
