Three-day training programme on “Ornamental Fish Farming and Aquarium Fabrication” was organized by College of Fisheries, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana, 
to furnish self employment oriented technical skills for ornamental fisheries to thirteen participants including, fish farmers, youth, women and entrepreneurs from different districts of Punjab. Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Head Department of Aquaculture, communicated that ornamental fish business is developing very fast in urban areas due to huge demand at state and national levels, as aquarium is becoming an integral part of interior designing not only in modern day houses but also at public places like airports, railway stations, malls, restaurants, hotels, parks, institutes, offices, hospitals etc. Hence, there is a vast scope of taking up ornamental fisheries as an entrepreneurship venture for self employment with substantial earnings without much space and labor requirements, she added.
According to Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Course Coordinator of the training program, the participants were given technical knowhow on different aspects of ornamental fish culture like identification of important ornamental fish varieties, culture and breeding techniques, best management practices in respect to feeding, water quality management and health management, along with colour enhancement, fish packaging and transportation techniques for reaping maximum economic returns. Participants were also trained in aquarium fabrication, aquarium setup, aquarium maintenance and propagation of aquatic ornamental plants with an aim of equipping all the participants with multiple entrepreneurial options in ornamental fisheries. Dr. Sachin Onkar Khairnar, Technical coordinator of the said course, harmonized various demonstration sessions and also provided an insight about developing small-scale backyard model for culture and breeding of live-bearing ornamental fish and setting up an aquaponics unit, which can be easily 
adopted by household women, youth and hobbyists for a subsidiary livelihood option, which had been a great attention seeking factor among the participants.
While interacting with the trainees, Dr. Kulbir Singh Sandhu, Dean, College of Fisheries, GADVASU motivated the participants to adopt small scale enterprises like ornamental fisheries for additional income and financial security. He also advised them to keep in regular touch with the university experts for regular technical updates and up gradation of their skills to earn more for every penny they spend in ornamental fish business.
