To encourage the youth to adopt fish farming for employment generation, a one-week vocational training on Scientific Fish Farming was organised by Krishi Vigyan Kendra, Mohali at village Tira, block Majri which was attended by nine farmers. On the inaugural day, training coordinator Dr.Vikas Phulia (Assistant Professor, Fisheries) welcomed the trainees and apprised them of various activities conducted by KVK, Mohali for the betterment of the farming community in the district.He also discussed the vast and untapped potential of fish farming as an enterprise in the Punjab state. On the following days, trainees were given knowledge on various aspects of scientific management of fish farming such as site selection and pond construction, species selection, pre-stocking, stocking, and post-stocking management, nursery management of carp seed, feeding and health management, integrated fish farming, etc. which can yield higher income to farmers if practiced in letter and spirit.
The knowledge on zero waste technology for fish processing developed by GADVASU, Ludhiana was also imparted to trainees. Dr.Phulia encouraged the youth to adopt processing and value addition of fish as a high profit yielding venture which can be started with low capital cost.
An exposure visit of trainees was organised to the fish farm of Mr. Adeeb Singh Tiwana at village Harnampur guided by KVK, Mohali. Mr. Tiwana has expanded his farm to 17 acres within a short period of two years. He discussed his rich experience with the trainees and advised them to stay connected to KVK, Mohali and GADVASU, Ludhiana.
