Awareness Programme on Crop Residue Management Organized by KVK SAS Nagar
Krishi Vigyan Kendra, S.A.S. Nagar (Mohali) organized a capacity building and awareness generation programme on ‘Combating Environmental Pollution by Biomass Burning & Improving Livelihood by Promoting Circulatory Rural Economy’. This event was presided over by Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor,GADVASU, Ludhiana. The programme was attended by approx. 200 farmers and several officials of District Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Department. A technical session was held in which Dr. Ajay Kumar (KVK, Fatehgarh Sahib), Dr. Hasanjit Singh (Agriculture Officer, Derabassi), Dr. Gurdial Singh (ADO, Kharar), Dr. Harshneet Singh (KVK Samrala), Dr. Navjot Singh (KVK Mohali) and Dr. Sarabjit Singh Sooch (Principal Scientist, School of Energy Engineering, PAU, Ludhiana) delivered lectures on the various aspects of paddy straw management, soil health issues, DSR technology, weed and machinery in wheat cultivation etc. Progressive Agriculture farmers of the district also shared their experiences in straw management and benefits they got by not burning the rice straw. They also acknowledged the support given by KVK Mohali and District Agriculture Department. The guest of honour, Dr. J.S. Samra, Senior Advisor (Renewable Energy Programme), CRRID, Chandigarh discussed the various ways of utilizing paddy straw and mentioned the enterprises involved in procurement of straw. Dr. Rajesh Kumar Raheja, Chief Agriculture Officer, Mohali urged farmers to treat paddy straw as a source of wealth instead of considering it a liability. He also advised farmers to take bill while purchasing seed, fertilizers and pesticides to take necessary action in case of crop failure. Vice Chancellor cautioned the farmers regarding crop residue burning and highlighted its harmful effects on human health. An exhibition was also organized in which eight private companies, one FPO, one SHG and two entrepreneurs displayed their products. Dr. Parminder Singh, Associate Director, KVK Mohali thanked the dignitaries, farmers, and staff members for their active participation in the program. The stage was managed by Dr. Harmeet Kaur.
