Krishi Vigyan Kendra, GADVASU, Tarn Taran organized World Fisheries Day programme at village Bhurakona (Tarn Taran) . About 50 farmers and farm women participated in the programme. Speaking in the inaugural session of the programme, Dr. Balwinder Kumar, Associate Director (T) highlighted the importance of World Fisheries Day. He motivated the farmers to step into the fish farming for maintaining the world’s fisheries resources. In many nations, fish provide one of the most easily accessible and affordable sources of animal protein. Co-ordinating the event, Dr Piverjeet Kaur Dhillon, Assistant Professor (Home Science) told that world fisheries day celebrations serve as a reminder that we must focus on changing the way, to ensure sustainable stocks and healthy oceans ecosystem. Dr. Suresh Kumar explained that more than two third of the world’s fisheries have been overfished and many more are in a state of decline because of loss of habitat, pollution and global warming. Dr. Kumar suggested farmers to improve the communication between fishermen community and the scientific community through exchange of knowledge and science. Dr. Suresh Kumar stressed that there is urgent need to protect, defend and strengthen the communities that depend on the fishery for their livelihood.
