Vet varsity calls for empowerment of farmers for enhancing their income

The Directorate of Extension Education, Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized a training on “Empowerment of dairy farmers for enhancing their income” for the scientists of Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVK) in collaboration with ICAR-Agricultural Technology Application Research Institute, Zone-1, Ludhiana. In the inaugural session, Dr. Parkash Singh Brar, Director of Extension Education welcomed the guests to the training workshop. He said that KVKs have played a major role in promoting the application of technology in Punjab leading to increased farm income over the years. The training is an opportunity for the scientists of the KVKs to update their knowledge on the latest developments in dairy farming while simultaneously providing researchers with feedback from the farmers.

Dr. Rajbir Singh Brar, Director ICAR- ATARI was the Guest of Honor during the inaugural session. He said that regular interactions between researchers and extension workers help to generate new knowledge which translates into increased income of the farmers. Dr. Inderjeet Singh, Vice-Chancellor, chief guest of the function said that the scientists working in the KVKs must make efforts to motivate the farmers to acquire new skills and knowledge. GADVASU is ready to assist them with all possible means in this endeavour. The Vice Chancellor also enlightened the participants on improved management practices for increasing the production of buffaloes. He emphasized that refining the management practices alone can result in better performance of animals in terms of reproduction as well as production. Dr. Amandeep Singh proposed the vote of thanks.

Experts from GADVASU and PAU delivered lectures on different methods and strategies for empowerment of farmers. Dr. Khushdeep Dharni talked about the importance of Farmer Producer Organisation in marketing of milk and milk products. Dr. Inderpreet Kaur explained the economics of different livestock enterprises. She spoke in length on the factors crucial for increasing the profit from a dairy farm. Dr. Parminder Singh apprised the participants with the importance of feed supplements in increasing the productivity of dairy animals. The training was coordinated by Dr. Arunbeer Singh.
