GADVASU Organizes Anti-rabies Vaccination Camp for staff and students

February 24 Expiring at: May 10

The Department of Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex at GADVASU regularly provides free pre-exposure anti rabies vaccine to the students and staff working in the Veterinary hospital. This year also, a two days Vaccination Camp was organized in collaboration with the PAU Hospital and was inaugurated by Dr S S Singh, Dean, College of Veterinary Science, GADVASU. He emphasized that the veterinary and para-veterinary staff working in close contact with animals should have preventive vaccination against this disease.

Dr S Prabhakar, Head, Department of Teaching Veterinary Clinical Complex informed that Rabies is incurable viral infection with a fatal outcome. Rabies is transmitted through injection of infectitious saliva into a broken skin mainly through animal bite, licking of scratches, abrasions, and open wounds. He informed that a total of 125 students and 35 staff members working in the Hospital were vaccinated against rabies during the camp.

Dr D S Pooni, Chief Medical Officer at PAU Hospital told that in India, about 15 million people are bitten by dogs, every year and 30,000 deaths are reported due to rabies due to lack of prophylactive and post-exposure anti rabies vaccination and immunotherapy. Incidence of rabies is increasing every year due to increase in stray dogs. Control of stray dog population is pre-requisite for control of rabies.
