GADVASU Concludes National Level Training on Ultrasonography

Department of Surgery and Radiology, GADVASU has organized a national level advanced refresher training course on “Ultrasonography and other diagnostic modalities for farm and companion animals” from 12th February to 4th March, 2009, under the aegis of Center of Advanced Studies, ICAR. Dr N.S. Saini, Director CAS and Professor-cum-Head of the Department informed that the Centre of Advanced Studies was established in the department in the year 1994. Till date the department has conducted 20 training courses on various topics and over 215 Surgeons/Clinicians from various State Veterinary Universities/ State Agricultural Universities/ICAR institutes have been trained. Dr. N.S. Saini, informed that the Department of Veterinary Surgery and Radiology, GADVASU has done pioneer work in ultrasonography of large and small animals and the training was envisaged to impart the knowledge to other institutes of India.

      According to Dr Saini a total of 27 applications were received from all over India for this training course out of which 15 candidates were selected who represented 10 states. The participants were trained on ultrasonographic and ultrasound guided biopsy procedures for small and large animal patients. Lectures on radiography, computerized radiography, endoscopy, echocardiography, laparoscopy, MRI, ultrasonography, 3D/4D ultrasonography, ultrasound guided biopsy and clinical biochemistry were organized. Demonstrations were conducted for various ultrasonographic procedures for large and small animal patients and ultrasound guided biopsy for various abdominal organs in small animals.

      Dr N.S. Saini informed that Dr S.S. Bakshi from Christian Medical College Ludhiana and Dr Gursharan Singh from Gee Ess Heart Center Ludhiana delivered lectures on MRI and echocardiography. Dr S.S. Singh, Dean College of Veterinary Sciences informed that a specialized diagnostic center has been approved for the university and it will have state of art imaging facilities like Color Doppler, computerized radiography, CT scan/MRI which will cater to the patients from all over North India. Further the department is starting the three month certificate courses on Veterinary Diagnostic Imaging, Anaesthesiology and Orthopaedics.

      At the end of training the participants evaluated the programme and working of the department. The participants informed that this training will be highly useful for them at their respective institutes for diagnosis of various disorders in animals.

      Dr J. Mohindroo Associate Professor Veterinary Surgery & Radiology, informed that a compendium of lectures by the experts was compiled for the ready reference of the participants. The chief guest of the concluding function Dr S.S. Singh, Dean College of Veterinary Sciences released the compendium and gave away the certificates and momentos to the trainees during concluding function.
