College of Fisheries (COF), Guru Angad Dev Veterinary and Animal Sciences University (GADVASU), Ludhiana organized an-online Training Program on “Fish Farming” under ‘Bharat Ka Amrut Mahotsav’ celebrating the 75th years of independence of India. With an overwhelming response, 61 candidates, constituting of a diverse group of agriculture/livestock/fish farmers, private/government employee, students, youth including 24 enthusiastic entrepreneurial women attended the training program.
Dr. Vaneet Inder Kaur, Course Director informed that the said training program was tailor-made to infuse an entrepreneurial aptitude among aspiring stakeholders to take up ‘Fish Farming’ as a promising business endeavor for livelihood and employment generation, driving to “Atmanirbhar Bharat’.
Dr. Grishma Tewari and Dr. Rajinder Kaur coordinated 8 technical sessions on best management practices (BMPs) in respect to complete ‘Package of Practice’ for fish farming (Aquaculture), starting from site selection, construction of pond, pre-stocking, stocking, post-stocking management and harvesting, with special emphasis on seed quality; biosecurity; feed formulation and feeding regimes; water quality and health management; harvest and postharvest management, marketing, processing/value addition in respect to different species like carps, pangas, shrimps, ornamental fish etc. Participants were also educated about various entrepreneurial aquaculture related activities, such as seed production, feed manufacturing, water testing, fish processing/value addition, aquarium fabrication, ornamental fish production and trading. Importance of communication skills to become a successful entrepreneur was also discussed. Special session on upcoming intensive aquaculture technologies like Recirculatory Aquaculture System and Biofloc technology, was also organized.
An interactive session with progressive fish farmers, Mr. Jasvir Singh Aujla (Ludhiana) and Mrs. Amandeep Kaur (Jalandhar) motivated the budding entrepreneurs with real time experience sharing from the farm site. Information regarding GADVASU utility services and various state/central govt. startup aquaculture promotional schemes, including Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), was also shared with the trainees.
Addressing the trainees, Dr. Meera D. Ansal, Dean, COF highlighted the potential resources, opportunities and scope for developing aquaculture in the State and advocated judicious utilization of resources for responsible aquaculture development to achieve long term sustainability in terms of food security, food safety and ecological health.
Dr. Prakash Singh Brar, Director Extension Education, GADVASU informed that university is committed for capacity building of stakeholders and technology transfer to end users for comprehensive development of livestock and fisheries sector, with special emphasis on entrepreneurship development among youth, women and the farming community to promote self-employment leading to self-reliance.
