DAIRY-MICROBIOLOGY

The Department of Dairy Microbiology at the College of Dairy and Food Science Technology offers postgraduate programs, including M. Tech. and Ph.D. degrees in Dairy Microbiology. Additionally, the department actively teaches Dairy Microbiology at the undergraduate level, covering both B. Tech. Dairy Technology and B. Tech. Food Science Technology programs. Our dedicated mission is to equip graduates and postgraduates with the latest knowledge and skills necessary to meet the growing demands of the dairy, food, and pharmaceutical (biotherapeutic) industries, and to encourage them to pursue doctoral and post-doctoral studies. Our department provides students with best teaching, high-end research and provides opportunity to interact with academicians, industry professionals and students at national and international level, via routine seminars/webinars in areas of global interest. Department has established scientific collaborations with internationally renowned institutions, giving students ample opportunities to publish high-impact articles through these collaborations. Our department's research has been featured in prestigious journals such as Frontiers in Microbiology, Food Bioscience, Journal of Functional Foods, and Journal of Applied Microbiology. The department also hosts international students and visiting researchers through various funding programs like the TET Fund and the CV Raman Fellowship. Department’s state-of-the-art research facilities include a molecular biology unit and a cell-culture laboratory equipped with high-end instruments such as PCR, Real-Time PCR, Level 2 Biosafety Cabinets, CO2 incubators, and freeze dryers, in addition to essential dairy microbiology facilities. These resources support the academic, research, and extension programs in areas such as probiotics, synbiotics, functional foods, antimicrobial resistance, and pathogen detection.

The faculty at the Department of Dairy Microbiology are enthusiastic and internationally acclaimed, as evidenced by their high research scores and citations. They have secured several externally funded research projects from organizations such as DST, DBT, SERB, and MoFPI. Our department has hosted several collaborative projects, including the prestigious IACR-Niche area grant focused on antimicrobial resistance. Faculty members have received numerous prestigious awards, including the Associate Fellowship of the National Academy of Dairy Sciences (India), the Post-Doctoral GOLD Fellowship, Young Scientist Awards, Best Teacher Awards, and Best Researcher Awards.

Students of the department have earned several accolades, including best poster and oral presentation awards at national and international conferences, and prestigious fellowships. Recently, the department successfully completed the mentorship of a DST-INSPIRE Fellow and a post-doctoral researcher under the National Post-Doctoral Fellowship (N-PDF) program of DST. Department also offer campus placement for postgraduates and prepare them for national competitive exams. Alumni from the department hold esteemed positions, such as Assistant Manager at Milk-Fed, Punjab, Assistant Professor at GADVASU and PAU, and Post-Doctoral Research Scientists in the UAE, Dubai, and the Slovak Research Academy in Slovakia, as well as various roles in multinational companies.
