VETERINARY-ANATOMY

Department of Veterinary Anatomy was established as one of the constituent departments of the College of Veterinary Science, Punjab Agricultural University Ludhiana in November 1969. The laboratories are equipped with state of the art facilities like micro-projector and cryostat microtome to conduct histomorphological, histochemical and histoenzymic studies. The department is a pioneer institute in gross anatomy and enzyme histochemistry, forensic anatomy, stem cell biology, reproductive immunology and plastination. The department is transcending to formalin free teaching and has developed 3D printed Models and AR/VR models, plastinated specimens/luminal casts, video-documentaries, e-atlas and animated power point presentations. The research impetus is on gross anatomical, histomorphological, histochemical, scanning and transmission electron microscopic, immunohistochemical, histoenzymic, radiological and ultrasonographic studies on different organs/systems of the domestic animals and birds for better surgical comprehensions. The department has national (IIT, Rourkela, Orissa and PAU, Ludhiana) and international (University of Saskatchewan, Canada) collaborations for research and Problem-based learning (University of Calgary, Canada). As a capacity-building exercise, the postgraduate programme was started in 1972, and 53 M.V.Sc and 27 Ph.D students have been produced till now. The faculty has international exposure for upgrading the teaching and research. The mandate of a veterinary anatomy department is multi-faceted, encompassing quality education to training young veterinary professionals and undertaking advance robust research to deliver valuable research outcomes for facilitating further research in the field of veterinary anatomy. The department also offers certificate courses on forensic anatomy. The information acquired is applied to disseminate cutting-edge technologies developed in the field of veterinary anatomy to the students/scientists/farmers for the benefit of the animal husbandry sector and other stakeholders.
